Enhancing understanding of ecosystem multifunctionality in mountain regions

چکیده

Abstract Mountain landscapes that are managed to provide several ecosystem services (ES) have the potential sustain high levels of biodiversity while also meeting multiple human needs. The promotion multifunctional has become an important policy target in land management and gained research traction under definition ES‐multifunctionality. However, scale dynamics patterns ES‐multifunctionality remain poorly understood rarely integrated into recommendations. To address this gap, we used two diversity indices quantify based on 11 ES indicators at different spatial scales a case‐study region European Alps. approach captures provided patch landscape ( α ‐multifunctionality) as well unique contributions ecosystems regional β ‐multifunctionality). Cultural ecosystem services of mountain regions: Modelling the aesthetic value

Mountain regions meet an increasing demand for pleasant landscapes, offering many cultural ecosystem services to both their residents and tourists. As a result of global change, land managers and policy makers are faced with changes to this landscape and need efficient evaluation techniques to assess cultural ecosystem services. This study provides a spatially explicit modelling approach to est...

Several scales of biodiversity affect ecosystem multifunctionality.

Society values landscapes that reliably provide many ecosystem functions. As the study of ecosystem functioning expands to include more locations, time spans, and functions, the functional importance of individual species is becoming more apparent. However, the functional importance of individual species does not necessarily translate to the functional importance of biodiversity measured in who...

Reply to Byrnes et al.: Aggregation can obscure understanding of ecosystem multifunctionality.

We manipulated soil animal communities in combination with nitrogen fertilization and found that individual grassland ecosystem functions had contrasting responses across the manipulations (1). We therefore cautioned against using a single multifunctionality index that aggregates individual functions to characterize overall ecosystem functioning (1). Byrnes et al. (2) contend that this caution ...

Locally rare species influence grassland ecosystem multifunctionality.

Species diversity promotes the delivery of multiple ecosystem functions (multifunctionality). However, the relative functional importance of rare and common species in driving the biodiversity-multifunctionality relationship remains unknown. We studied the relationship between the diversity of rare and common species (according to their local abundances and across nine different trophic groups)...
